Community Dialogue

First, due to my latest laptop issues that resulted in yet another complete reformatting of my laptop's hard drive, I am now temporarily without Microsoft Word.  Does anyone know of a program that's compatible with Word and can open Word documents that isn't Open Office?

Second, anyone have any tips on quick healing for a slightly swollen and sore hand?

Third, after a brief absence, it's time for the Community Dialogue!

When times get tough and life gets stressful, I usually find myself resorting to guilty pleasures in an effort to get me through them while retaining at least the tiniest shred of my sanity.  Considering how stressful life has been lately, I've been using them A LOT.

Dark chocolate, historical fiction, and really trashy "reality" TV tend to be my biggest guilty pleasures.  Dark chocolate and historical fiction aren't terribly bad in and of themselves.  I have no idea why I find myself tuning in to watch shows like "Rock of Love" or "Tool Academy".  I suppose the shows are like a train wreck or a car accident: you don't want to look but you can't look away.  My friends make fun of me for watching them but I just can't help myself.

What are your guilty pleasures?

Character Discussion - Charity

The Gerald character discussions is still going on here: http://community.livejournal.com/scenebyscene/29127.html

So... Charity. She's a "19 year old drifter and a high school drop out. Due to hard life, she wound up mixed up with the wrong crowd and abused alcohol and drugs. She's the person responsible for the hit and run, drunk driving accident."

What kind of hard life did she have? Abused by parents? Or just a rich brat who decided that life was "hard"? (That may explain why she's a drifter with an apartment.) Or did she only drift until she landed in where ever this screenplay takes place? (I was assuming semi-large city in the south west?)

What does she do for money? Steal? Sell crocheted hats on street corners? Just bum drugs off her BF?

Is she smart? Dropped out of HS because she thought it sucked or because it was too hard?

Are her parents still alive? Did she ever love them? Did she used to live in an upscale area or the slums?

Does the wrong crowd she hangs around with drift with her? Or does she just find druggies where ever she goes?

How does she feel about life? What were her goals? Does she still have them? What did she want to be when she grew up?

Can you think of anymore questions? And more ideas about what makes Charity tick?

Personally, I like to think of her as a girl who thought she had it bad and just wanted to not be tied down anymore. Probably with a single mother who's reformed in some way... hence naming her child Charity. So... Charity starts partying early in HS, gateway drugs and what not, can't pay for the hard stuff, has to resort to sexual favors to get her fix, hates her mother for constant nagging and then leaves home. Probably got the car by blowing the local junk yard worker.

Or, you know, she could have had a well meaning mother who got beat constantly by her drunk husband, who wasn't Charity's real father and she finally scraped together enough money to buy an old car and flee home. Having no other money, and no HS deploma, it was difficult for her to aquire any income, so she had to turn to the streets, sleeping on park benches until some junkies found her and let her stay at their place and coerced her into doing drugs. And then she was hooked.

What do you think?

Feature Length Screenplay... So far!

The scenes making up the Feature Length Screenplay up until this point are posted on our companion website.  You can find a direct link to them here

Please forgive the formatting.  When I did a copy/paste to the website, it messed it all up.  I'm working on getting it fixed.  I'll be sure to update the page as new scenes get written.

If there are any other pages you think should be added to the website, please let me know!

Be sure to take part in the character discussion with odannygirl7 .

Also  check out frustratedpilot </a>'s 60 Scenes Exercise to help you get in the holiday spirit while still being creative.

The deadline for the Short Script Challenge has been extended to the end of the month to give people more time to work on it.  The winning entry will be produced.  As a reminder, the topic is "Webcams".  All entries can be posted here.

Merry Christmas!

On this busy holiday, may you be reminded of what is truly important: family and friends. Take time to love, time to laugh, and time to rest and be refreshed by those you hold dear.

Most of all, take time to help those around you who need it. Times are hard for many families this year. While we may not all have money to give, we all have the gifts of love, time, and talent. As 2008 becomes 2009, find a charity who supports a cause you believe in and find out ways you can help in their mission. Even an hour once a month can do wonders for the many charities out there. In helping others, you will find that you are really helping yourself.

And now, a Christmas poem. May you hold it’s message close to your heart all year through.

The True Spirit of Christmas
by Marajo Tenderass

Lots of people
Crowds everywhere
Rushing and pushing and shoving,
Going nowhere.
It’s Christmas time again
Have to get all those things done
Hustle, bustle, quickly,
We must beat the sun.
Must get this and must get that
Maybe this nic, maybe that nak
When did it happen?
When did we lose track…
It’s a race, yes it is
We are running, yes we are
But lets not forget
Before we get too far-
What is really really important
Doesn’t take much to figure out
Take time to love
and love from the heart.

Movies, movies, movies!

So far, it looks like people are in favor of taking a break from the Feature Length Screenplay competition for the holidays.  If you haven't voted yet, please be sure to get your vote in soon.  I'll be closing the poll at the end of the day tomorrow.

The character discussion with </a></b></a>odannygirl7  is still going strong.  Be sure to head on over and add your thoughts to what is certain to be a valuable tool for the Feature Length Screenplay.

Once you've posted your thoughts to the character discussion, check out</a></b></a>frustratedpilot's 60 Scenes Exercise for a bit of creative mayhem.

The deadline for the Short Script Challenge has been extended to the end of the month to give people more time to work on it.  The winning entry will be produced.  The winning writer will, of course, receive credit for it.  As a reminder, the topic is "Webcams".  All entries can be posted here.

Since the holiday season is upon us, I figured it would be fun to ask what everyone's favorite holiday movies are.  Do you like the classics like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Carol"?  Do you prefer more of a snarky take on holidays like "A Christmas Story"?  Or are you more of a horror fan and prefer to watch things like "Black Christmas"?

There are also a ton of movies set to come out over the holidays.  What movies are you dying to see?

Holiday Craziness

Forgive me for not posting the scene card on Friday but I needed a few days to think.  With the holidays quickly approaching and all the craziness they bring, I've decided it might be best to put the Feature Length Screenplay competition on hiatus until after the first of the year.  I think it would be good to give everyone a break to focus on family, friends, fun, and festivities since I'm sure everyone is probably taking a hit in some capacity from all the economic turmoil going on right now.  Trust me, owning a small business right now sucks hardcore.

What do you all think?  Is it a good idea?  Is it a bad idea?

A break would be great!

Let's crash onward through the end of the year!

If we take a break, I'll put up some fun scenewriting exercises that people can participate in.

There's also the character discussion that odannygirl7  posted for the Feature Length Screenplay that people can participate in, regardless of whether or not we take a break.

Also, I'm going to go ahead and extend the deadline for the Short Script Challenge through the end of the month to give people more time to work on it.  I've also decided the winning entry will be produced.  The winning writer will, of course, receive credit for it.  As a reminder, the topic is "Webcams".  All entries can be posted here.

Last but certainly not least, frustratedpilot  has another fun thing to join in when you have time during this busy holiday season!
